what we do

Soil Cycle BTV is a decentralized compost network operating within the city of Burlington, VT; we collaborate with households, gardens, and gathering spaces to recycle organic scraps and build soil locally. In addition to hauling food scraps by bike, Soil Cycle BTV offers equipment and training for a neighborhood-scale, in-vessel composting system that is safe from critters and reaches hot (160 F) temperatures year-round. We transform your scraps into compost on-site or around the corner, and reapply that nourishment back into your neighborhood. The unique system we provide is intended for urban residents, specifically renters; one full cycle requires just 3 months and 20 square feet to generate 1 cubic yard of compost.

affirmations from our community

“I love Soil Cycle! My favorite part is smelling the fresh wood shavings when I open my bucket.

The wood shavings also help reduce odors, which is a game changer for handling compost at home. No need to fuss with bags or drop-off locations. They’re friendly, communicative, affordable, community centered, and bike-powered.”

Jenna Emerson, Adult Educator

“Learning from Soil Cyle has transformed how I compost and enabled me to handle a lot more material, and have more fun doing it…

Their system is simple and great for our scale, and their team is lovely to work with. Thanks to them I am able to handle close to 50 gallons/week of compost produced by a school onsite where I am a land manager. The compost is fluffy & rich, finishes quickly, and is doing wonders for our community gardens! I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a great mentor and a clean and easy system for managing food scraps.”

Tyler Pastorok, Land Steward of Rock Point

“Soil Cycle is a wonderful service that we can’t recommend more. Not only is it a cool concept, but the convenience of it is unbeatable. Our food waste is taken away biweekly and it is so easy…

Soil Cycle has changed the way our household consumes food. Knowing someone is using their physical labor to take it away makes us more aware of our waste and this is life-changing. We feel a sense of power, community, and connection to the earth in being a member.”
